  • "Salmon in the Classroom"

Posted by Mr. Jason Woodard at 5/16/2013
We are always seeking out extra curricular activities here at Whitefish Township School. One of the benefits of living where we do is having Natural Resources like Tahquamenon Falls and Whitefish Point. Not to mention the Hiawatha National Forest and Whitefish Bay that is apart of the greatest of the Great Lakes, Lake Superior. This week students finally released the salmon that they have spent all year raising in our classroom.  Students were also able to participate in the yearly DNR "Bucket Brigade" where they helped the DNR release trout.  Thanks to the local Department of Natural Resources and Camp 33 for a wonderful and educational event. On our home page are photos from the event.

  • 18 Mills Renewal May, 7 2013

Posted by John Prescott at 4/17/2013
On May 7th Whitefish Township Community Schools will ask voters to renew the operational funds millage necessary for day to day functions.  This in not a vote to increase taxes or add more expense to anyone's tax bill, it is the same millage that has been in existence since Proposal A went though in 1994.  This is a tax on Non-Homestead Properties and other properties that the state felt necessary to tax at the time. Every school in the state of Michigan must pass this millage to receive any additional funding from the state, in our case "menu funding".  At this time there are 166 school districts that will be asking the voters in their school district to approve the 18 operational mills proposal.

There have been some districts in the state have approved this ballot for a 20 year period of time, there are others that think this should just be a state mandate.  As a personal opinion the Board of Education thinks that it is important to have the voters aware of this millage and to never try to hide it for years.  This is why we are asking for this millage for a three year period.  We could have asked for a shorter or longer period of time but the next time we will have to ask for approval of this millage will be a national election year and will save the school district money for polling expenses.

If you have any questions concerning this proposal or the ISD Special Education Hedalee Override OR if you would like tour our school and see our day to day operation, feel free to contact me at the school, 492-3353, I will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have concerning these proposals.
